Voice & narration
Voice & narration
How the automatic narration works, and how your voice powers the game.
Speaking and listening are at the heart of Myriad Paths. All voice features are completely free and work in two directions: the Game Master reads every scene aloud to you, and you speak your actions instead of typing them.
Here is everything you need to know about controlling the audio and how your microphone data is kept private.
Narration
Every scene is narrated automatically for free.
Every response from the Game Master is automatically read aloud. This feature is free and never costs Sparks — and we plan to keep it that way, so you can listen to your adventures without worrying about your balance.
Playing in co-op? Narration plays locally on each player's device and isn't synchronized. If you and your friends are sitting in the same room, you'll hear an echo. To fix this, just mute the game on all devices except one.
Note: Currently, there is one narrator voice per language. We plan to add more voices, including unique ones for NPCs, in the future.
Mute and Stop
Learn the difference between turning off the sound entirely and skipping a single message.
You can control the audio using two buttons in the room menu:
- Mute Narrator: This is a persistent, per-device setting. It turns off narration entirely on your current device until you turn it back on. Muting your device won't affect the audio for other players in the room.
- Stop: This is a one-time action. It simply interrupts the audio playing right now, but the Game Master will still read the next scene aloud when you make your next move.
In short: use Stop if you just want to skip hearing a specific scene, and use Mute if you want to play in silence for the whole session.
Microphone & privacy
Your browser converts your speech to text locally. We never record your voice.
You play the game using your voice. (To see exactly how a turn works, read The turn).
We take your privacy seriously. The microphone uses your browser's built-in speech recognition (Web Speech API). Your voice is converted into text locally on your device, and Myriad Paths only receives that finalized text. We never receive, record, store, or upload any audio files.
Because speech recognition happens entirely in your browser, accuracy and language support depend on your device's OS and browser. We officially support English and Russian, though other languages might work. To see which browsers support voice features, check our System requirements.
