The turn — how you play

How gameplay works

Gameplay is a simple conversation: you act, and the world reacts.

Playing Myriad Paths feels like a natural conversation. The game moves forward one turn at a time in a very simple rhythm: you decide what to do, and the world reacts.

Instead of pressing buttons or typing commands, you simply say your action out loud. The Game Master processes your move, writes the next scene, and reads it back to you. Below, we'll explain how to interact with the game, how outcomes are decided without rolling dice, and what you can do with the story once it's written.

Making your move

How to use your voice to play and understand the microphone states.

You control the game with your voice. Just hold the microphone button, describe what your character does ("I push the door open and step inside"), and let go. The game will translate your speech into text and make your move.

Since there is no text input, you will need a working microphone — check the System requirements if you run into issues.

One action = one turn. Focus only on what your character does. The Game Master will take care of the environment and other characters, responding with a single scene. You can speak in either English or Russian; the Game Master understands both flawlessly.

Is the microphone greyed out? Sometimes you can't press the mic. The note beneath the button will tell you why. Usually, it means:

  • You've lost your internet connection.
  • It's another player's turn in a multiplayer game.
  • You haven't selected a character yet.
  • Your browser doesn't support speech recognition.
  • You've run out of free turns and Sparks.

Don't worry about connection drops: your recordings are safely tagged. If your internet blinks out, your move will still register exactly once when you reconnect — it won't duplicate or vanish. If you release the mic without speaking, nothing happens; just try again.

How a story begins. Once you choose your character, the Game Master will generate an opening scene and read it to you. If you're unsure how to start, look for the suggested actions provided below the text to help you get moving.

Outcomes and stakes

The story relies on logic, not dice. Your choices matter, and failure is a real possibility.

Myriad Paths is an interactive narrative, not a rigid simulator. There are no dice rolls, no character stats, and no health bars. The Game Master decides what happens next based purely on the story's logic: who you are, the situation you're in, and how cleverly you approached the problem.

Because of this, the characters you meet will react naturally. Good roleplaying is rewarded, while a lazy lie might fail completely if an NPC sees through your bluff. You are welcome to try wild, out-of-the-box ideas — the Game Master will play along beautifully — but the world will still react logically, so nonsense won't automatically grant you success.

The stakes are real. The game won't artificially save you from the consequences of your actions. Depending on the world's tone, you might face loss, getting trapped, or even death.

Don't be discouraged if you hit a bad ending! If your character dies or gets stuck, you can always rewind the story to an earlier moment (more on that below) and try a different approach.

Interacting with a scene

Replay the voiceover, generate an image, share a moment, or rewind time.

Once the Game Master writes a scene, you have several options:

  • Replay the audio. Every scene is automatically read out loud. You can replay the narration, pause it, or mute the room entirely. Read more in Voice & narration.
  • Generate an image. Tap a scene's action menu to create an illustration of that exact moment using a Spark. These are saved in a gallery that you can view in fullscreen. Read more in Images in the game.
  • Share the moment. Want to show your friends what just happened? The share button creates a public link. It takes a snapshot of the scene's text and any generated images, and copies the link straight to your clipboard.
  • Rewind the story. Your adventure saves automatically in the My Stories tab, so you can leave and return anytime. If things went terribly wrong, tap the load action on an earlier scene. The story will jump back to that exact point. Note: In multiplayer games, rewinding affects everyone in the room.
