Images in the game

Discover the difference between free atmospheric backgrounds and on-demand scene illustrations.

While playing, you'll encounter two types of artwork: atmospheric backgrounds that change automatically as you move, and cinematic scene illustrations you can generate to capture a specific moment in your story.

Free backgrounds vs. Paid scenes

Backgrounds set the mood for free. Tap the icon to generate a specific scene for 1 Spark.

Location Backgrounds (Free): These help you immerse yourself in the world. They change automatically when your character moves to a new area and don't cost anything.

Scene Illustrations (1 Spark): Tap the 🖼 icon on any GM's response to see what that exact moment looks like. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Sparks are required: Scene images cost 1 Spark from your balance (welcome or bonus turns only cover text actions).
  • Wait a moment: There is a short delay between generating images. If the button doesn't respond immediately, wait a few seconds and try again.
  • Need another angle? You can generate a new image for the same scene for 1 Spark (editing an already generated image isn't supported yet).
  • Co-op billing: In multiplayer, the cost is covered by the person who clicked the button.

How images look

The game remembers faces and places. All images are 16:9, and the style is set by the World.

Recognizable faces and places: The engine remembers your NPCs. If a character or location appears multiple times, they will remain visually consistent throughout your story (main characters hold together perfectly, while background extras might vary slightly).

Cinematic format: All images are generated in a 16:9 aspect ratio, ensuring they look great on both phone and desktop screens without any cropping.

Unique art styles: The visual aesthetic is chosen by the world's creator, making every story within that setting feel cohesive. If you want to experience a different art style, simply start an adventure in a different world!

Saving and errors

Images stay in your history forever. Failed generations are automatically refunded.

Everything is saved: The images you generate are permanently attached to your story history — you can scroll back months later and they will still be there. To save an image to your device, simply long-press it (on mobile) or right-click (on desktop) and select save.

Errors are free: If an image fails to generate, your Spark will not be spent. Just try again. If it fails multiple times, the scene's description might be triggering a safety filter, or the image server might be temporarily overloaded. See Image didn't generate for more info.
